I, too, am interested in Richard Burton, but I don't think he married Mary Elizabeth Salling. I think it was Joseph Burton she married. John Peter Salling named both Richard & Joseph Burton in his will. Depending on the source, I've seen both Richard & Joseph named as Mary Elizabeth's husband.
I have two sources concerning these people.
1) History of Rockbridge County Virginia by Oren Morton, p. 526 states this for John Peter Salling: m. Ann; children: George A., John, Catrine (m. Henry Fuller 1751), Mary E. (m. Joseph Burton 1755). But on page 273, he states that Richard Burton married Mary Elizabeth Salling.
2) Kegley's VA Frontier by B. F. Kegley has a sketch about J. P. Salling on p. 151 as well as this record on p. 81: 21 Dec 1754, Joseph Burton and Mary Elizabeth, his wife of Albemarle, 200 acres on N. Br. Of James R., from John Peter Salling. Au. Deed Bk. 6, 521.
A third source you can find on the web (under Augusta Co. VA GenWeb) is Chalkley's Chronicles. In Vol 3, PP 410 – 419, I found this: 10th May, 1764. George Adam Salling, of Orange County, North Carolina, and Joseph Burton and Margaret Elizabeth ( ), of Saint Mathew's Parish and upper district of Abenezer in the Province of Georgie, to Thomas Paxton, millwright, £180, 200 acres on east side North Branch of James River; Henry Fuller's corner. Teste: Nathaniel Evins. Delixered: Thos. Paxton, June, 1766.
The varying dates & locations (as well as the change in name of Mary to Margaret) gives me a lot of following up to do, but I think these are the same people. You also mentioned finding the Fullers in Orange Co., NC.
Richard Burton is mentioned in a record that may help me in researching some families with connections in Augusta & Bedford Co. VA, then in Rutherford Co. NC. This is also found in Chalkley's Chronicles at http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/volume_1/or05_70.htmhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/volume_1/or05_70.htm
AUGUSTA COUNTY COURT RECORDS.
ORDER BOOK No. V. AUGUST 19, 1756.
Page (189) Mary Whiteside's complaint for separate maintenance vs. her husband. William, is groundless and dismissed; but it appearing that John Underwood and Mary, his wife, Richard Burton, Joseph Underwood and Elizabeth Underwood, relations of Mary, have stirred up differences between William and Mary and threatened the life of William--bound over.
I would love to find out how Richard Burton is related to the Underwood/Whiteside families.
