So----this does appear to be your Sterling "of New Hanover Co., N.Car." and not the younger one that I suggested..... Interesting thoughts: In 1884 he would have been 54 years old - I suppose you are never too old to take up studies. I have not seen the original census records for Sterling but was told that in 1860 his occupation was listed as "Mechanic". And 1880 listed as "Carpenter". Can you confirm this? Apparently a man of many talents. Have you heard anymore about a ship wreck during the Civil War? I see in 1850 census (before moving to No.Car.) that Sterling "19 years of age" is listed in Grainger Co., Tn. and listed as a "Student". Maybe a little old for still be in a 'high school' - so could he have been then in a school of 'higher education'? Now I am rambling. Also of interest are the people (Drs.) who signed that document: 1) Dr. T.L. (Thomas Lorton) Branson = he was uncle of Sterling. Sterling's mother was Elizabeth Branson. 2) William J. Branson MD was obvioulsy also a relation. 3) Gorge (or was in George ?) Salling MD Va. Does Va. mean he was from Va.? Who was he? Always brings up more questions than answers doesn't it.
