According to my information the Sterling Salling born 1830 (married Mary Elizabeth Hewlett 1852 in New Hanover Co., NC.) was the "eldest son" of Henry Salling according to Henry's will dated 1849 in Dade Co., Mo. Henry I believe was son of John you mention (by #1 wife Nancy ----.
It has been claimed (see message 73 and 75) that John married Hannah Johnson 1802 in Knox Co., Tn. I don't know about a Hannah Booker. Anyway, John and #2 wife (Hannah?)had more children - one of which was another Sterling, born 1811. I have also heard that family tradition claims that after Hannah died John moved to Mo. with some of his children. Perhaps this is correct as 1840 census of Barry Co., Mo. lists Henry Salling and in his household is a male 70-80 years old - his father John? This Sterling (born 1811) married Elizabeth Penn 1836 in Polk Co., Mo. and is also listed in 1840 census of Barry Co., Mo. This Sterling (born 1811) died 1845 in Dade Co., Mo. when Henry was appointed his administrator.
Henry married as his 2nd wife Salina Louisa Penn 1840 in Barry Co., Mo. - a sister of Elizabeth Penn. Hence, half brothers Henry (born ca 1800) and Sterling (born 1811) married sisters. And Henry named a son Sterling (born 1830).
Is this clear to you? Would be nice if we could definitely clarify this information - anyone out there can add to this? JoAnn
