As the quote from Johnny Cochran was his ARGUMENT to the O. J. Simpson jury, not a COMMAND, I thought you would understand my meaning. If I had been on that jury, incidentally, I would have voted the other way.So please know that while I have endeavored to convince you about the "Schell" game, to make a "Sale" for my theory, I would never presume to command your acceptance.
My theory, by the way, is that Ann (_____) Sale was from an English or Scottish family living in the vicinity of Essex, Spotsylvania or Caroline County, Virginia, as that was where William Sale was evidently living at the time of his marriage.Note that the will of his grandfather Cornelius, who devised a tract of land near Fredericksburg to William and his mother Hannah (Jones) Sale Blackburn, gives no indication that William was living at any great distance from the testator. The will was written about the time when William would have been looking for a wife.
Identification of Ann's maiden name is rendered difficult by the destruction of the early wills and deeds of Caroline County, as well as by the loss of the colonial Anglican parish registers of practically the entire region.Consequently, we may never ascertain her maiden name. But the likelihood is that she had at least one sibling among the numerous residents of central Virginia who relocated to Halifax County, NC in the 1750's and 1760's.No other Sale is found there (exept for Thomas in nearby Granville County), so I would guess that the family connection involved in that migration related to Ann's side.
Alternatively, she may have been a Redding.I have mislaid my notes on this, but as I recall there was some paper that she executed on which all or most of the witnesses were Reddings, yet as far as I know none of her children married into the Redding family. One wonders why she would have relied on the Reddings in this fashion if they were not kin of some nature, though I freely admit that they might have just been helpful neighbors.
I'm simply offering evidence for your consideration.(See my post of a few minutes ago with the reference to the website where you can find the family Bible.I should have mentioned there that on the "Schell genealogy" page, click on the "Michael Schell Sr." link to get to the Bible transcript.)
If you should choose to believe that Michael Schell was fabricating his own son Jacob's birthdate in the family Bible, you're free to believe that. But I would hold that the Bible entry is more powerful proof than a shrunken leather glove found on the Simpson estate.
See also http://shareie.accessgenealogy.com/http://shareie.accessgenealogy.com/, where the site owner (evidently based on Jacob's 1795 will) identifies Jacob Shell as having a daughter Peggy (not Ann) who married a Sale / Sales, and a daughter Ann (Nancy) who married a Taber. No room here for Ann (____) Sale.I'm not touting this page as pure gospel, however, because it shows a daughter Fanny born in 1814, 19 years after Jacob's death.Obviously she belongs to a Jacob Shell of a later generation.
We have had a fun debate over this. Now let's move on and be friends, as we're surely cousins.
