To be more specific, there are deeds for the immigrant William Sale in the 1660's and 1670's, and his widow and son Corneliu are listed on the quit rent rolls in 1704 in Essex County. These people appear nowhere in Hank Jones' exhaustive studies of the 1709 and later Palatine immigrants. They were English.
I believe that it would be the same with the Simontons, and to my knowledge the Greens and Sanuels.Sure, there were no doubt some Germans with the Smauel surname, but I know of no connection between Anthony Samuel and any German ancestry.
Now by the time the William who was born around 1720 and who died in 1788 got marriad, there were Germans in the general vicinity of where he would have been then, as the Germanna colony had been settled quite a while earlier.Nevertheless, English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish brides in the region would have bestly outnumbered the Germans in that period, so until something concrete shows up, I'll continue to stay with the notion that she was of British heritage.
