Hi, Elaine -- Thanks so much for your reply to my posting regarding my ggg grandfather Thomas S. SAYLE and his family. My "missing link" is my 4th great grandfather, supposedly another William SAYLE (middle name Erven). After looking at information on the families from RI, SC, and VA, the VA SALE family seems to be the most likely one for mine to connect with -- however, I have no real evidence for this. As you mentioned, I've seen SALE/SAYLE spelled varous ways. I'm hoping you can help. The family I'm referring to is: Generation 1: William SALE, b. ca. 1638 (England), d. ca. 1704. Had children Anthony, Elizabeth, Cornelius (if there were others, I haven't seen their names). Generation 2: Cornelius married Mary SAMUEL, ca. 1690 in Essex Co, VA & they had 8 children: William, Anthony, John, Cornelius, Thomas, James, Hannah, Elizabeth. Generation 3: William SALE (1692-1744) m. Hannah JONES, ca 1717, prob. in VA & had William SALE, the only child's name I have for them, although I'm sure there were others. Generation 4: William SALE (1725-1788) m. Nancy Ann SHELL and they had 13 children: Cornelius, Leonard, Martha Patsy "Patty," Sarah "Sally," Mary "Molly," Thomas, John, Margaret "Peggy," James, Robert, William, Elizabeth, & Frances. (OR possibly a brother of this William . . . six of these kids' names are in my later SAYLE family. ) Generation 5: William SALE III b. ca. 1774, Wilkes Co, NC, died after 1787; wife's name not known to me; children's names not known to me. (OR perhaps his brother Thomas or Robert OR a cousin) I have felt that William III, above, may be the best candidate to be the father of my Thomas S. SAYLE (my 3rd great). The information I have says that my Thomas' father was named William Erven SAYLE. I've talked to a present-day cousin who says he is supposedly the 10th in a line of William E. SAYLEs -- the number may be off, but this may be sort of basically true. However, IF the dates above are correct (and I'm hoping they're not) William III would have lived to be only 13 years old and that would rule him out as my Thomas' grandfather. Of course, it's possible that IF I come from this Essex VA family, my line may come from someone whose name I don't even have at this point. Some notes: William III is just the right age to be my 4th great grandfather. My ggg grandfather Thomas S. SAYLE had a brother Robert L SAYLE. Thomas named his sons: Robert L. SAYLE & William Erven SAYLE. Thomas named his daughters: Frances Ann "Fannie," Susan Elizabeth "Susie," Mary "Molly" (my gg grandmother), Belle, Fennetta "Nettie," & twins, Delana & Delina. Another cousin had a note that Thomas S. SAYLE's mother was "Hannah." Another note identified her as "an AMIS." My Thomas' son William Erven SAYLE named his children: Thomas Jefferson; George E (Erven?); Robert "Bob"; Homer; (female, unk.); William Erven. My Thomas' son (Dr.) Robert L. SAYLE named his children: Anna Elizabeth & Mary Eulalia "Eula" (only had two daughters) I believe Thomas' middle initial "S" is for Samuel and Samuel is a frequently used name in some of the SAYLE families I've found information on -- perhaps it came from Mary SAMUEL's surname. There was a Dr. Cornelius W. SAYLE who married Lucinda M. ADAMS 3 August 1830 in Sumner Co, TN. I think he may be a relative of my family. The HAYNES & LAURENCE/LAWRENCE families that are closely related to my SAYLE line were in Sumner Co, TN before moving to Hickman Co, KY; MO, Obion Co, TN and finally on to northeast Texas in 1857. There are several doctors in the various SAYLE families I've found in TN & KY. There's a reference to a Dr. Samuel SAYLE being "own cousin" of my ggg grandfather Thomas. This may be the Dr. Samuel SAYLE who married Olivia Wakefield KING. Lots of tantalizing tidbits but nothing I've been able to pin down so far. Here is what I tentatively am trying to prove (or disprove) as my lineage: (Immigrant) William SALE, b. 1638, England Cornelius SALE & Mary SAMUEL William SALE & Hannah JONES William SALE & Nancy Ann SHELL (OR a brother or cousin) William SALE III (or possibly one of his brothers) (wife possibly an AMIS) Thomas S. SAYLE & Elizabeth HAYNES (my 3rd great) Mary "Molly" SAYLE & Charles Claiborn CATE Emmagenia Elizabeth "Genia" CATE & John Henry RAY Anita RAY & Jefferson Frederic SWINT Mary SWINT & Jack R. SMITH Rebecca SMITH (me) If you can give me even any ideas or clues or rule out a particular person, I'd be forever grateful. Again, thanks for your reply to my posting.
