In Reply to: Cornelius & William Sale - Essex Co. by Barry Wood of 1032

Hi, Barry --

Thanks for your informative postings. I've read them with interest. I'm trying to link my SAYLE family
farther back. I was told that they were related to the Rhode Island SAYLES, but I doubt it. The family
of William SALE, b. 1638 in England seems a better fit. I've just started to look at this, so I don't
have much to go on yet. What I think is worth checking into is this line:
William SALE, b. 1638, wife unknown;
Cornelius, b. ca. 1666, m. Mary SAMUEL;
William SALE, Sr., b. ca. 1692, m. Hannah JONES;
William SALE, Jr. m. Nancy Ann UNKNOWN;
William SALE III. Do you know anything of this William SALE III? Did he have a son William, also?

My 4th great grandfather was William Erven SALE/SAYLE . He may have married an AMIS woman;
possibly named Hannah. This family connects with AMIS/AMOS, HAYNES, and LAURENCE/LAWRENCE
families in TN, KY, MO, and some of those families were in NC (also VA) before moving to TN and beyond.
I only have two children's names for William Erven (his estimated birth year is ca. 1778) -- Robert SAYLE
who married Frances HAYNES and Thomas S. SAYLE who married Elizabeth HAYNES, sister of Frances.
They were daughters of Henry HAYNES and Frances LAURENCE. Below is my family group information

Husband's Notes...
from Goodspeed's History of Obion County, Tennessee:
"Among other early settlers were Obidiah ROBERTS, northwest of Union City; Benjamin TOTTEN, at Totten's well, in the northeast part of the county; also in the same locality, Jethro L. BYRD, John HARPOLE and Thomas SAYLES . . . "

The Sayle family came to TX from Union City, Obion Co, TN in 1857. Union City is in NE Obion Co, TN and is the county seat.

The information that Thomas S. SAYLE died in Hopkins County came from Hunt County, Texas Probate File #53 on Thomas SAYLE. His birth date and death date came from Sayle Cemetery Inscriptions.

Dr. Sam SAYLE was a cousin of Thomas S. SAYLE. [Who was Dr. Sam SAYLE? Does our Thomas' middle initial "S" stand for Samuel?

1840 Census for Obion Co, TN:
138. Thomas Sayles, 110001-020001
1 male age 0-5 (?)
1 male age 5-10 (Robert L. SAYLE, age 9)
1 male age 40-50 (Thomas S. SAYLE)
1 female age 5-10 (Frances Ann "Fannie" SAYLE)
1 female age 30-40 (Elizabeth Haynes SAYLE)

According to "1850 Census Tennessee, Vol. 6, Ruddel through Wallace" transcribed and indexed by Byron and Barbara Sistler, Evanston, Illinois, pub. 1976, the family of Thomas S. SAYLE and Elizabeth HAYNES is shown as follows:

Thomas 44; Elizabeth 42; Robert 19; Frances 16; Mary 14; William 11; Susan 8; Belle 6; Fennetta 4; Delina 1; Delana 1; William SMITH 27, T T O 8 638

Thomas SALES is found on the National Archives Microfilm Publication, Microcopy No. 593, Population Schedules of the Ninth Census of the United States, 1870, Roll 1593; Texas, Volume II (309-629A) for Hunt County, Texas, as follows:

#182-181 Farmer ($1600-3000)
Thomas SALES 58mw Ky. (b. 1812)
Mary 50fw Ga. (b. 1820)
William 25mw Tenn. (b. 1845)
Susan 23fw Tenn. (b. 1847)
Netty 20fw Tenn. (b. 1850)
Granville MACKLIN 23mw Tex. (b. 1847)
Jas. 23mw Tex. (b. 1847)
Thos. 18mw Tex. (b. 1852)
Mary HART 16fw Tex. (b. 1854)
Melisa 14fw Tex. (b. 1852)

Thomas had remarried sometime after Elizabeth HAYNES died in 1862. Who are the Macklin boys? Are they, as well as Mary and Melisa HART, children of his new wife, or other relatives of hers? Further research is needed.

How long was this family in Stoddard County, MO? Did they go from there to Obion County, TN? Apparently they were in Hickman Co, KY before going to TN.

I have always had Obion Co, TN as Thomas SAYLE's birthplace, but the 1870 census says he was born in KY and in light of the information sent to me by JHS (a Sayle/Haynes cousin) I suspect Kentucky may be correct, possibly Hickman County, where his father-in-law died.

There is a marriage in Hunt County, TX on 7 Dec 1898 of Tom SAYLE and Willie Elma Mitchell. Recorded in Book J, page 187. This Tom SAYLE is a son of Thomas S. SAYLE's son, William Erven SAYLE.

Hopkins County Clerk's Office doesn't have any records this far back.

There's a Robert SAYLE in the 1840 Hickman County, KY census

Wife's Notes...
Thomas, Elizabeth, and their grown children moved to Texas in 1857. Their son (Dr.) Robert L. SAYLE moved first, from Graves Co, KY, then the parents and others followed, supposedly from Obion Co, TN.

If anyone has any pertinent information or any ideas, I would appreciate hearing them. Thanks in advance!
