I don't know about Rachel Sale's parentage, but imagine that she's very likely a niece or (very slight chance) a much younger sister of our William Sale. I have never been able to dismiss the possibility that our William Sale is the son of that William Sale who left a will in Essex County mentioned not only a son William but also sons Robert, Asael, etc. Our Wilkes county pioneer William Sale had a son Robert, conceivably named for a brother of William's.
I am interested to know your source for the concept that the wife of John Sale (son of William) was Susan Johnson. I am working on a hypothesis that the Rebecca Sales named in the will of Jonathan Johnston of Granville County, NC, was the wife of John's brother (and my direct ancestor) Leonard Sale.
I am advised by a descendant of that Johnston family that they interchanged between Johnson and Johnston rather freely, as did my own 3rd great grandparents John & Marthat Johnston/Johnson in Jefferson and Morgan Counties, Ohio.
Where was Susan Johnson Sale from?
From another cousin I met through Genforum, a very helpful & knowledgeable researcher, I learned that Rachel (Sale) Gray is listed on the 1850 mortality schedule as having been born in "Md.," presumably meaning Maryland.
Essex Co., Va. is, of course, very close to Maryland. I suppose there's some chance that a brother of William Sale moved to Maryland, died there at a relatively young age, and William and Ann Sale took the brother's daughter -- Rachel -- to live with them, such that she was in Wilkes County at the right time to meet & marry Samuel Gray.
I have no clue as to your question about Amelia Gray, as I have no Grey/Gray descent that I know about.
