Have you looked for your William Sale on the 1850 through 1880 censuses? You ought to be able to find him with his parents.

The William Sale son of Cornelius would have been pretty old to have been marrying someone born in 1847. This would be like a January-December wedding, with the bridegroom about 70 plus years older than the bride (if you can even imagine such a thing).

I should think that you will find the right guy in the third or perhaps even fourth generation down from Cornelius' father William Sale (the patriarch of all known Wilkes County Sales, or at least the white ones).
