Hi Roseanne, caroline Harrison Sage was the daughter of Robert Monroe Harrison and "Margaret", the "ward of Hans Axel von Fersen, a Swedish count who took part in the American War of independence as part of the French contingents...also famous for his association with Marie Antoinette. Robert Monroe Harrison was born in 1770 in Fairfax Virginia, the "son of the aide de campe of Geo. Washington" whom we assume must have been Robert Hanson Harrison, of an old Swedish family from Maryland...probably illegitimate. The church in Fairfax was apparently burned during the US Civil War so data from that source is missing. He had a very interesting history in the US navy and early State Department and finished his life as US consul to Jamaica. In newspaper accounts and family anecdotes, Robert was the cousin of William Henry Harrison although we have not been able to find the documentation for that. Caroline Harrison Sage was likely born in Sweden around 1813 though some sources have 1802 (unlikely), the second child of Robert & Margaret. The family lived in Sweden, thenthe US, then to various postings in the West Indies. Her male siblings were all named for various US politicians, including RMH's cousin, William Henry, which complicates things ...in the US census of, I think 1860, she is shown as living in Brooklyn adjacent to her brother William Henry...in the 1850 cnesus ( I think) she is shown as living with her daughter(?) Jane Hendricks, born in New Orleans ...just some snippets. My great-great-great grandmother was Caroline's younger sister, Elizabeth Virginia Harrison who married Peter Alexander Espeut, a French/Creole planter whose family went to Jamaica from the southeast of France via Barbados and Haiti...their descendants went from jamaica to England and India and then Canada.
I am not aware of Charles Newman Sage. My impression is that families were pretty closely related/inter-related. I would be very interested in hearing more!
I can also give you more info on Robert Monroe Harrison or you can do a google search since his exploits have lately become of interest to students of US colonial history.
