In response to your posting, I am a second generation descendant of Grover Cleveland Saufley, son of Isaac Newton Brown Saufley. We share some mutual roots in Valentin Saufley/Safley or however you spell it. I'm told there are 21 different spellings of the name. A Valentin Sofftel, on September 27, 1746,came to America (Philadelphia) on the ship ANN GALLEY out of Roterdam, last from Portsmouth, England. Valentin brought along a family to Virginia. We have no documented facts other than in 1780 he was taxed for two horses and ten cows. 1790 Census shows that there were nine persons in the home family. Soem say he had a wife Anna Marie Schneider and a daughter Anna died. Then he took a 2nd wife Catharine and she is buried beside him at Freidens church in Rockingham Co. Ten children were born, -Mary, Henry, Catherine, George, Adam Christine, Sophi, Barbara Suzanne, Elizabeth and one daughter Rachel from Barbara. The above information was shared by a new found cousin of mine, Robert Saufley, 7808 Timber Ridge Rd., Mt Crawford, Va. 22841 Phone 234-8336
