J --
I have all of what you have listed except for Robert (christened in 1761), William (christened in 1759), or James (christened in 1764). Most of my early Safley information has come from Karen Safley Taylor of Springville, Iowa. If you e-mail me, I will forward her address to you. Also, please send me your e-mail address so we can connect more easily and not always on this site.
As far as Safley family before William (1736-1791), I have William Safley (or Saphla), born September 26, 1736 in Temple Village and died on February 26, 1791 as the son of William Saphla (b. abt. 1703 - d. June 27, 1729 in Temple) and Magdalen Thomson (b. September 11, 1704 - ?)
Cockpen is was a small village just south of Edinburgh.
Agnes (Hunter) Safley, wife of John Safley (1766-1832), embarked from Greenock, Scotland and arrived in New York on board the "Lady of the Lake" on June 21, 1834 along with son John and her daughter Frances.Following their arrival in the United States, Agnes and Frances first lived with Andrew and Isabella Tait in Trumbull, Connecticut. Isabella was Agnes's daughter from her first marriage to James Ronaldson. Agnes's son George immigrated to the U.S. in 1842. After farming in Linn County, Iowa for five years, he settled in Cedar County in 1847. He later farmed in Red Oak Township (Cedar County) Iowa. Another son, James (my great-great grandfather)came from Scotland to the U.S. in 1835 at the age of 22 1/2. He traveled with his first cousin Andrew Safley and Andrew's widowed mother, Isabella Gilmour/Gilmore Safley. They arrived in New York City on April 14, 1835. Another son Robert arrived in the United States on July 23, 1842 on board the ship "Engleton" with his wife, Helen Fairbairn. Robert farmed near Onion Grove (Cedar County) Iowa near present-day Clarence. Daughter Frances (also known as Fanny) married Socrates Hotchkiss Tryon, brother of her brother James's second wife, Sally Eliza Tryon, on May 8, 1837 in Knox County, Illinois.
Besides John Safley's wife and children, John's brother Robert's family also emigrated to the U.S. Daughter Agnes arrived in the U.S. in 1852 with her second husband, William Hogg, and some of her children from that marriage. Son Thomas, his wife Henrietta, and their three children arrived in the U.S. on board the ship "Ganges" on May 18, 1836. Daughter Janet arrived in New York City on May 18, 1836, on the ship "Ganges."She traveled with her brother Thomas, sister-in-law Henrietta (Fenwick) Safley, and their three children. Janet married her first cousin, James Safley, (my great-great-grandfather) in Cohoes (Albany County) New York, on January 6, 1837. [By the way, Cohoes, New York is near Waterford, New York, both early industrial towns not far from Albany.] Son John arrived in the U.S. from Scotland in 1830 according to his obituary. He lived at Waterford, New York, in Indiana, and in Knox County, Illinois. He settled in Iowa in 1842. Son James arrived in the U.S. on board the "Lady of the Lake" on September 10, 1842 with his wife Margaret. Son Andrew embarked from Greenock, Scotland and arrived in New York on June 21, 1834 along with Andrew's widowed mother,Isabella (Gilmour) Safley, and his cousin James Safley. Andrew and James traveled to LaGrange County, Indiana sometime before October of 1835. Later, Andrew moved to Linn County, Iowa.
I'll be happy to share more about each of these regarding their settlement in the U.S., most of which took place in Linn and Cedar Counties in the new state of Iowa.
