R.C. Saffold attended the Southern Commercial Convention in Vicksburg in 1859. He introduced a resolution to the effect that the Convention study the capacities of southern harbors. The Convention passed the resolutuion and appointed him to the committee which would undertake the study. In 1876, R.C. was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis.
