My original message stated that my family "originated" in Posen province, a part of Prussia from the late 18th century. I suppose the name was from the province of Saxony, and my guess is that a paternal ancestor had business dealings there, perhaps at the Leipzig Fair. That is the sort of thing that would cause a name to be chosen in 1809 or whenever it was that Prussian Jews were required to adopt surnames (instead of using simply the name of the father as a "surname", as was done most recently in the Scandinavian countries).
