Biography: a Representative from Vermont; born in Georgia, Franklin County, Vt., October 23, 1793; attended the common schools and Burlington College; member of the State militia and served during the War of 1812; studied theology in Philadelphia; was graduated from Columbian College (now George Washington University), Washington, D.C., in 1821; was ordained a minister and preached at Cambridge, Westfield, and Underhill until 1825, when he returned to Georgia, Vt.; was pastor of the Georgia Baptist Church over forty years; member of the State house of representatives 1826-1835, 1838-1840, 1847-1849, 1851, 1861, and 1862; served in the State senate in 1841, 1843, and 1845; secretary of state of Vermont in 1841; elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third and Thirty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1853-March 3, 1857); chairman, Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business (Thirty-fourth Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1856; delegate to the first Anti-Slavery National Convention; county commissioner of Franklin County in 1861 and 1862; moved to Sycamore, De Kalb County, Ill., in 1867 and continued his ministerial duties; died in Sycamore, Ill., January 22, 1885; interment in Georgia Plain Cemetery, Georgia Plain, Vt.
