Unknown Sabin married Margaret Godwin

My 3rd great-grandmother, Margaret Godwin (daughter of Netheldred Godwin) married an unknown Sabin, supposedly born in Kentucky. I have been unable to find the family in the 1860 or 1870 Census and I have no idea when Mr. Sabin died (or of his parentage).

Here is the outline of my family:

3. MARGARET2 GODWIN (NETHELDRED1) was born 1828 in North Carolina (Source: 1880 Colorado Federal Census.), and died Bef. 1900 (Source: Listed in the 1880 Census, but cannot find her in the 1900 Census with any of her children.). She married UNKNOWN SABIN Aft. 1850 (Source: 1850 Indiana Federal Census, appears with her father.). He was born in Kentucky (Source: Census Schedules for his children all state his birthplace as Kentucky.), and died Bef. 1880 (Source: 1880 Colorado Federal Census, Margaret is listed as widowed.).

Notes for MARGARET GODWIN:

Census Schedules:

1. 1850 Indiana Federal Census, Putnam County, Washington Twp., p. 577 (with father)

2. 1880 Colorado Federal Census, Larimer County, Livermore, Precinct 5, ED 70, Sheet 7 B (widowed)

More About UNKNOWN SABIN and MARGARET GODWIN:

Marriage: Aft. 1850 (Source: 1850 Indiana Federal Census, appears with her father.)

Children of MARGARET GODWIN and UNKNOWN SABIN are:

11. i. JAMES M.3 SABIN, b. 1854, Indiana.

12. ii. MARIA ELLEN SABIN, b. 30 July 1857, Indiana; d. 08 January 1888, Moingona, Boone County, Iowa.

iii. JOSHUA F. SABIN, b. 1858, Indiana (Source: 1880 Colorado Federal Census.).

Notes for JOSHUA F. SABIN:

Census Schedules:

13. iv. SYLVIA M. SABIN, b. May 1859, Indiana.

v. JOHN S. SABIN, b. 1861, Indiana (Source: 1880 Colorado Federal Census.); d. 17 May 1935, Clarinda, Page County, Iowa (Source: letter from Clarinda State Hospital to George Smith, nephew.).

Letter from Clarinda State Hospital, dated 15 May 1935 (original in possession of Nancy Jo Bluhm):

To: Mr. George Smith, Boonesboro, Iowa

Re: John W. Sabin, #9262

Dear Sir:

June 18, 1921, the above-named patient was admitted here as a patient, a State Case; with his place of legal residence unknown. It was stated that he had been living in a moving wagon, having no team would get neighbors to move him from place to place. Your name and address was given on his commitment papers as correspondent in his case--no relationship, if any, given; one Charles Resmain was givenas "informant" in his case; and W.F. Glenn and Charles Harbaugh accompanied him to the hospital.

During the time he has been here, we have found he was once a patient in the State Hospital at Pueblo, Colorado; but they knew nothing of any relatives. Mr. Sabin is not doing well at this time and is failing quite markedly. We are anxious to get in touch with any relative or friend who might be interested in him and in giving us instructions to follow in case he passes away, as to burial.

If no interested parties are located, since he is a State Case, when he dies, it will be necessary to turn the body over to the State Department of Health, to be used for scientific purposes.

May we hear from you at once in this matter?

Yours truly,

R.D. Smith

Superintendent.

Letter from Clarinda State Hospital, dated 18 May 1935 (original in possession of Nancy Jo Bluhm):

To: Mr. George Smith, Boone, Iowa

Re: John W. Sabin, #9261

Dear Sir:

Your uncle continued to fail after our letter to you and passed away quietly, without suffering, and without leaving any word or message for friends or relatives, at 5 a.m., May 17; death being due to Exhaustion from Senile Psychosis: Simple Deterioration.

In accordance with your telephone conversation with you, in which you stated you were financially unable to pay for burial, he was buried in a marked grave, which can be located at any future time, in the Hospital Cemetery at 10:30 this morning.

Yours truly,

R.D. Smith

Superintendent.
