Loyalist Ryerse/Ryerson - New Brunswick, Canada

I am researching Benjamin McDonald, a loyalist. In 1801 Benjamin petitioned for land in Sunbury, New Brunswick with three other men - Jonathan Brown, Samuel Ryerse and William Vallan. On the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick webssite in the Government Records, land petitions information I found:

Joseph Ryerse/Ryerson petitoning for land in Sunbury in 1785 with "Military - Prince of Wales". I know the Prince of Wales Regiment was part of the Queen's Rangers.

Peter Ryerse/Ryerson petitioning for land in Sunbury in 1793 with Jonathan Brown and James Chase. I know James Chase was the brother of Benjamin McDonald's wife, Pamilla/Permelia.

Samuel petitioning for land in 1785 in York county with "Military - New Jersey Volunteers".

Samuel petitioning for land in Sunbury in 1802 with "Military - New Jersey Volunteers", William Vanallen and Benjamin McDonald.

I believe Benjamin was from New Jersey. I would like to know more about why these men petitioned for land together.

Also, I found information about Jonathan Brown in the Old Soldiers info, "Attached to the Battalion New Jersey Volunteers commanded by Captain Ryerson..."
