Hello Laura:
I research the Irish Family History Foundation's database. It contains 12,800,000 surviving rcds for abt 70% of Irish counties. Rcds are increasingly sparse B4 1840, rare B4 1800. Cos. Donegal and Derry were recently added to the database.
Note 1 - Without a KNOWN county, the chance of an ancestor's rcds NOT being in this database is AT LEAST 30%.
Note 2 - Only 1/2 of Co. Cork's rcds are in this database.
Note 3 - The RC church kept control over most parish rcds from Tipperary (north). These are ONLY available thru the Tipperary Family History Research center at a substantial fee (regardless of outcome).
Note 4 - Microfilms of parish church rcds are kept by the National Library of Ireland (NLI).
For Pat(rick) Carroll M 1885 +/- 4 yrs, Co. Tipperary, I found 11 rcds: 2-1881, 2-1883, 1884, 2-1885, 1886, 2-1888, and 1889.
For Mary Ryan M ditto, I found 168 rcds - far too many to easily summarize here. It is possible to eliminate most, if not all, of these false positives by comparing the records for Patrick with those for Mary parish by parish
For Mary Ryan B 1864 (exact), Co. Tipperary, with the father's forename unknown, I found 83 rcds; most were civil rcds; none were in Fethard CP.
For Alice Ryan B 1864 +/- 4 yrs, ditto, I found 17 rcds - too many.
For John Ryan B ditto, I found 308 rcds - waaay too many.
For Pat(rick) Carroll B 1860, ditto, I found 3 rcds: Cloughjordan, Portroe, and Roscrea RC parishes. None had a father forenamed William.
Google the Foundation's name to lead you to this database. Register, opt to be notified as rcds are added and browse. Pls post your search results to my genforum msg.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
