I have William Jarvie Ruthven (born 13 April 1810 to Gilbert Ruthven and Christian Jarvie) who married Catherine Maitland (born 23 June 1811 to James Maitland and Elisabeth Bird) on 19 May 1829 in St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh.
They had 8 children - the first couple were born in Leith but from 1840 the rest were born in Carluke. In 1841 the census shows that in 1840 they had a son called Watson Ruthven, but it also shows a James Watson with no explained relationship, also born in 1840 in Carluke. This James Watson seems to disappear in later census returns. One possibility is that we have two references to James Watson Ruthven, although this would be hard to prove conclusively unless there was some records in Carluke other than the Church of Scotland ones.
I cannot find any reference to another William Ruthven marrying a Catherine Maitland.William Jarvie Ruthven lived until 1879 which is not consistent with being described as deceased on James Ruthven's marriage record. This may also be an error and it is possible that the Free Church in Carluke would have some record of the marriage. He is not shown at home in the 1861 census and I have so far failed to trace him - although he does reappear in 1881.
the data for this couple is therefore close to what you are looking for but has some inconsistences that would need to be explained.
