I just checked on the Winneshiek County GenWeb page for their Civil War Records, particularly for the 38th Iowa Infantry, and George W. Rutherford is on the list. Although on the Hubbard County Minnesota GenWeb page states through an article written for the Park Rapids Enterprise by Ira Birham, that George W. Rutherford Jr was the one who enlisted, butthat information is incorrect, because George Jr. was born March, 1852 in Indiana, and was 9 years old when the Civil War started in 1861. As I said previously, George W. Rutherford SR was born in 1820 in Jefferson County Kentucky, and also stated on his Civil War enlistment that he was forty four years old. Maybe he took the train to enlist. He stated that he was a farmer. Was he trying to hide from his relatives in Kentucky, who fought in the confederacy? Inquiring minds would like to know.
