Ms Walls -
As one knows - In Genealogy - all relationships must be fully documented together with the events one cites.
In examining "Your Statement":
"John RUTHERFORD {m Violetta REYNOLDS}.......He and his sons Fought in Lord Dunsmore War.......".The following may be of interest:
ITEM #1:1774 - Lord Dunsmore War - Source: Capt. Walter CROCKETT's Company Payroll Records:
Privates:
John RUTHERFORD
William RUTHERFORD
ITEM #2: 1786 September 7th - Source: Present day Lincoln Co., KY., Marriage Records:John RUTHERFORD m Mary SIMPSON
The Clergy who officiated, noted on the Marriage Record: "RUTHERFORD says he is ninety-seven years old and wants it noted on the record."
CONCLUSION:The John RUTHERFORD who m Mary SIMPSON was 97 years old, in the year 1786, which would have made him 85 years old in 1774, when a John RUTHERFORD, was listed
as a "Private in Walter CROCKETT's Company during Dunsmore's War".
The Records Show:A John RUTHERFORD served in 1774 under Capt. Walter CROCKETT in Lord Dunsmore's War, but they do not show, nor do they "Prove", the Gentleman was 85 years old at the time,
nor do they "Prove", he was the same John RUTHERFORD, who m Mary SIMPSON in Lincoln Co., KY., on the 7th September 1786.
