Yes most interesting Lois. Especially when you consider that the "Mac" was, I think, celtic meaning son of and another that last names didn't come into being until after King Malcom 2nd requested the Scots to take a surname. Until that time people would say something to the effect that they were " Robert of Roxburgh " or some such way of giving who they were. I have seen at least one theory about the Rutherford surname that is the most likely and that is that when King Malcom 2nd requested surnames that the then clan chief was living near a ford on the Tweed river which had red clay banks,red in celtic being ruth, and he decided the surname should be Ruthford. Another was that the clan chief stated they were living at a ruthford on the Tweed and were given that name.
I don't think DNA would help prove much unless there is a clear paper trail and/or that a DNA sample was taken from a ancestor who is known to be a Rutherford.
