Good Evening Chuck
The Julian Calendar was used up until 1752 which in effect caused some sources to show dates i. e., "1622/23".The actual New Year began on March 25 so the records of events prior to that date carry a year lower than in present day usage.
It doesn't make a lot of difference but does account for some slight confusion.
The Virginia County Formations are always a factor in any Genealogical Search.
1692 - {Old} Rappahannock Co., VA was divided into Essex and Richmond Counties.
1656 - {Old} Rappahannock Co., VA was created from Lancaster Co., VA.
1651 - Lancaster Co., VA was created from Northumberland County.
1632 - Northern Boundary of Virginia was set by the Maryland Charter.
And always there is the fact the designations of Sr., and Jr., did not necessarily imply Father and Son but rather that one individual was older or younger than the other.
There are only two Rutherford Wills in the Late 17th Century and Early 18th Century in Essex Co., VA., that of John Rutherford, Essex Co., VA Will Book 1735-1743, pgs 426-427, dated:15th day of January 1742 which does indeed name "His Wife" and "His Children" and the Will of his Wife "Mary" 9th September 1749, Essex Co., VA Wills, Book 9, "Probate" pg 216:
Those two you can "Hang Your Hat On" Chuck and say they are "RIGHT"!!!
But even here identifying the "Sons" and "Daughters" must be done with solid research.
Good Luck On Your Trip To Virginia - Lois
