Samuel & Lydia Vandegrift Rutherford, (W)Va 1830s
In 1821, Samuel Rutherford married Lydia van der Grift (Vandegrift), daughter of Ebenezer and Mary van der Grift of Monongalia Co.The weight of the evidence seems to show that Samuel was probably a son of Philip Rutherford, since there aren't any other Rutherford families at that time, and Philip seems to be the father of Mary E. Rutherford, who married Lydia's brother Leonard van der Grift.
I thought that I had found Samuel in the 1840 census, but deed records seem to indicate that that Samuel's wife was named Susannah.Bea Ellis suggested that there was only one Samuel, and that he had two wives, Lydia Vandergrift and Susannah Gosade or Gasade.I haven't been able to contact her to ask about this.
Lydia seems to have had a son in 1815 by Willis Lawler, a family friend who was a little too friendly at the time.I don't know his name, or what happened to him, but I think he was in Ebenezer van der Grift's household in 1820.
Can anyone verify whether the Samuel Rutherford in question is one person or two, or whether he and Lydia had any children?Does anybody know who Lydia's son from 1815 was? What happened to Samuel after 1840?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
