This Michael is probably the son of the immigrant John George Ruth; Ruth researchers, please let me know what you think. Michael married Catherine Mary or Mary Catherine Doll and had sons John, George, Abraham, Jacob, and Michael, and daughters Eve (Windel), Elizabeth, Barbara (Copp/Cupp), and Catherine (Guyer). Bucks Reformed Church records of Springfield Township show a John George Ruth born 29 April 1778 baptised 6 June 1778 son of Michael and Catherine Ruth with sponsors George Hess and Barbara Doll. George Hess was the son of Nicholas Hess, a neighbor of John George Ruth. According to Michael's pension application, he was born in Bucks County in 1746 and moved to Shenandoah County VA in 1779. Here is a partial transcript of the application: Shenandoah County State of Virginia: On this 13th day of December 1836 personally appeared before me David Crawford a justice of the peace in and for the county of Shenandoah in the state of Virginia Michael Roots a resident of Shenandoah County and State of Virginia aged ninety years who…made the following declaration… That he volunteered in the second week of August 1776 in Bucks County state of Pennsylvania and served a tour of five months as a sergeant in the flying camp Pensylvania militia under the command of Col. McAllister, his captain was named Valentine Hup his Lieut. was named Philip Trumpbower and his ensign was named Samuel Dean. He states that he marched from Bucks County in the month of August 1776 to Amboy New Jersey and was stationed at Amboy about four months. From Amboy he crossed over to Staton Island under the command of Gen. Mercer and was engaged in a small battle upon the island under Gen. Mercer and after the battle the army returned to Amboy a short time previous to the battle of Trenton and from Amboy the army retreated; and he was afterwards engaged in the Battle of Trenton under Genl. Mercer on the 26th Decm 1776 and after the Battle of Trenton he crossed the Delaware River into Pennsylvania and was discharged by his captain on or about the 15th January 1777 having served out his tour. He further declares that he removed to Shenandoah County State of Virginia in the year 1779 and on the ___ July 1781 he was drafted and served a tour of two months as a soldier in a company of cavalry from Shenandoah County state of Virginia under the command of Captain John Crookshanks his lieutenant was named William Dennis, he marched from Woodstock to Fredericksburg Va. and thence toward Richmond Va. under the command of Capt Crookshanks and then was attached to a regiment commanded by Col. Campbell , he marched from Richmond into the edge of North Carolina and thence back to Richmond and thence to near Yorktown Virginia and after having served for two months on this tour his captain was taken sick and returned home and he with another soldier was detailed to come home with his captain and did not return again to the service. … Interrogatory 1 When and where were you born? Answer- In Bucks County state of Pennsylvania in 1746. [He goes on to say he has no written record of his age, that he lived in Bucks County and Shenandoah County.] In later years, Michael's wife and younger daughters attended Friedens Church in Rockingham County VA. In many entries in the 1810s and 1820s are listed two Catharina Ruths, along with Barbara Ruth and then Barbara Copp. Once there is one Catharina Ruth and a Maria Ruth, probably Michael's wife, who was called Mary by family and friends. Her family, the Dolls, also moved to Shenandoah County around the time Michael did, and perhaps they all came together. Barbara Ruth married Joseph Copp/Cupp and moved to Preble County, Ohio. They are listed there in the 1850 census. Their daughter Priscilla married Harvey Minnix, and they were my 3g grandparents. Notify Administrator about this message?
