Hello, Connie! Poland was a part of Russia at the beginning of last century, also Ukrainia was. In 1921 Galicia joined Poland but then in 1939 it became a member of Ukrainian Republic of USSR.To say more correctly West Galicia is a part of modern Poland and East one ¡V of Ukrainia. In case you ancestor was a catholic he had to come from West Ukrainia I think. This property changes explain that mix you met with your Grandfather¡¦s biography. The fact that he was born in Sambor proved that he was from modern Ukrainia. Now it¡¦s a town in Lviv (Lvov) region in Ukrainia, where is Catholicism. http://www.sambir.lviv.ua/index_e.html it¡¦s a link to get info about this place. Name of your grandfather doesn¡¦t sound like Russian or Ukrainian. Probably he was Polish. There were many Jews there, maybe he was Jew. (To be honest I have the same ideas about my great grandpa ƒº). And I cannot say anything about Austrian origin¡K Galicia was a part of Austria also before. Anyway I wish you good luck in your searches. Evgenia Notify Administrator about this message?
