Hi, Brian, sounds like you're on the same track. Waldemar Grab, my father-in-law, was born in Nikolaifeld, Ukraine, on June 10, 1917. His father, Friedrich Grab, passed away of typhoid fever that same year. He was some kind of soldier wearing a red coat/uniform. His mother, Karoline Bischler, had about 8 kids, only Lina and Frieda and Waldemar survived. Karoline Bischler's mother was a Braun? I've tracked the Grab back to german-speaking Alsace, emigrated some time early 1800's, several migrations during 1812-1814. Lot of this is hearsay (Frieda's daughter Ilsa) evidence and needs confirmation. Karoline's parents had an orchard/gutshaus in nearby Kronsfeld. I'm trying to find where Friedrich Grab came from in Germany (I suspect SW part near the Rhine.) Ilsa emigrated from Russia after the wall came down. Her German dialect points to the swabian regions of Germany (where I grew up before emigrating to western Canada).
We're busy with farming right now, I'll check back Monday. Let's keep in touch, Antje
