Though there are a variety of Karl... places in the Odessa region of Russia (today Ukraine), there are none named Karlsen. Col = Kolonie and is attached to many village names. Alexejewka / Aleksejewka is known to be the name for 2 different villages there. See

I would suggest you contact the Germans From Russia Heritage Society for further help. If you go to this page on their website and click on the "Surname Exchange List", you will find that at least 6 people are researching the Geis / Geiss surname. This family is listed as being Catholic so you will find that research is a bit more difficult than for Lutherans who also lived in those regions.

Hafman does not appear to be a legitimate surname. It is more likely to be Hoffmann or similar.
