In Reply to: Re: Straighten me out on Mathew/Malachi by Ellis Keith Rushing of 2689

This is some of what I have on this line of the Rushing family. I would like to share. Ron
In HIS will is our peace.

1. Mathew M. (Mack)3 Rushing (William Cain2, Mathew1) was born Abt. 1831 in Robertson Cross Roads, Montgomery, Co., AL1, and died 22 Dec 1914 in Coffee Co., AL. He married Sarah Jane Amerson 22 Dec 1853 in Montgomery Co., AL2. She was born 23 Sep 1834 in AL3, and died 2 Jul 1918 in Coffee Co., AL.

Notes for Mathew M. (Mack) Rushing:
Mathew M. (Mack) Rushing, the first child born to William Cain and Mary (Rushing) Rushing was born about 1831 at Robertson Cross Roads, Montgomery County, AL. There are some discrepancies as to Mack’s date of birth. The 1850 Pike County Census shows his birth as 1831; his military records show his birth as 1827 and his grave has 1829.
Mack Rushing married Sarah Jane Amerson 22 December 1853. Sarah Jane was born 23 September 1834 in Alabama. Her father was from Georgia and her mother from South Carolina.
Mack Rushing was a Civil War Veteran, having served with the Confederate Soldiers of America. He entered service in 3 Mar 1862 at Elba, AL, as a Private in Company A, 33th Alabama Infantry and was discharged at Chicamauga, TN after being wounded at the Battle of Perryville, KY where he had an arm shot off. The left arm was amputated at the shoulder. Mack received a Pension #1429, Coffee County, AL, Witnesses: B. D. Simmons and W. D. Bryan. The date of his final discharge was 10 May 1865. Records on the internet recorded that he was wounded and captured at Battle of Perryville KY 10/8/62. He was sent to Cairo IL to Vicksburg MS for exchange via steamboat City of Madison 12/5/62. On roll of invalid corp 9/1/1864. (Records seem to suggest he was in the 33rd.)
Mack and Sarah had already settled near Elba in Coffee County before the war and were farmers. After the loss of his arm, it was said that Mack could turn out more work than most men with two arms. He was also a real good shot with a rifle with just one arm. He was very strong and short in stature.
There are numerous deeds recorded in the Probate Office of the Coffee County Courthouse for Mack and Sarah Rushing. There are also Crop Lien Notes that he made in order to plant his crops for the next year. It is interesting to read the wording on the papers. Some of these were hard to read; however, it is amazing that they were saved after the Elba Flood of 1990. The following are two of his Crop Lien Notes, dated 22 November 1878 and 28 January 1893 (100 years ago):

By the first day of October next, I promise to pay Henderson Brothers & Company or bearer Two Hundred Dollars for value received, it being for necessary advances in horses, mules, oxen and necessary provisions, farming tools and implements and money to procure the same obtained by me form them bona fide for the purpose of making a crop the next year on my plantation in Coffee County, and without such advancements it would not be in my power to procure the necessary ?, provisions, money, implements, etc. to make a crop the next year, hereby creating a Lien thereon in accordance with Sections 1858 to 1860 inclusive of the revised lands of Alabama and Sections 3286 to 3288 inclusive of the present lands of Alabama, and it is further agreed that if the said Henderson Brothers & Company shall advance me anything over and above the amount named in the above note that this Lien shall stand as security for the same as fully as if included in the original amount of this instrument and to further secure the payment for the advance herein before named in consideration thereof. I hereby waive all right of exempt Liens secured to me by the exemption and Laws of the State of Alabama, which may be exempt now or may be exempt thereafter to any resident of said State ? sale or execution or other legal process of any Court issued for the collection of any debt. Mack Rushing died 22 December 1914 and is buried at Zoar Methodist Church Cemetery in Coffee County. Sarah Jane (Amerson) Rushing died 2 July 1918 and is buried next to Mack.

The following is inscribed on Mack Rushing’s grave:

"REST SOLDIER, REST,
THE WARFARE IS OVER

ZOAR CHURCH AND CEMETERY

The land for the Zoar Methodist Church and Cemetery was donated by Mathew B. (Math) Rushing, a son of Mack Rushing. The church was established circa 1850 as well as several other churches in the area. Two families that helped to erect the church were the Johnsons and the Millers. The church was called The Zoar Methodist Church. Many Rushings were buried in the cemetery. In the 1960’s the property was purchased by the Holiness Organization and was renamed The Zoar Community Holiness Church. The church was moved across the road next to the cemetery and there is a pretty brick church there.

Several of the Rushing descendants are members of the cemetery committee today and help support the upkeep of the cemetery.(1)

33rd Alabama Infantry Regiment

The Thirty-third Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Pensacola, FL, on 23 April 1862, with men recruited from Butler, Coffee, Covington, Dale, and Montgomery counties. It proceeded to Corinth just after the Battle of Shiloh. Placed in the brigade commanded by Col. Hawthorn of Arkansas, the regiment remained at Tupelo untill the Kentucky Campaign began. It was part of the brigade of Gen'l Sterling A. M. Wood of Lauderdale, Gen'l Simon Buckner's Division, and was present at the capture of Munfordsville. At Perryville, the Thirty-third entered that conflict about 500 strong, and came out with but 88 rank and file. It came out of Kentucky with the army, and at Murfeesboro the loss of the regiment was comparatively large, for it was in Gen'l Patrick Cleburne's Division. The remainder of the winter was spent in camps near Tullahoma, and the regiment retired behind the Tennessee River during the summer. In the grand forward movement on the enemy's line at Chickamauga, the Thirty-third lost 149 casualties. Gen'l Mark Perrin Lowrey of Mississippi relieved Gen'l Wood after the latter was wounded and assumed command of the brigade [16th, 33rd Mississippi regiments, and J. H. Gibson's (18th AL) and Newman's (TN) battalions] the Thirty-third was effectively engaged at Missionary Ridge without loss. It was part of the wall of fire that checked the exultant federals at Ringgold Gap, where it lost but one man. The regiment passed the winter at Dalton, and was in the incessant battle from there to Atlanta, fighting during the day and entrenching at night, and losing many by the casualties of battle, particularly at New Hope Church, and around Atlanta. Having followed Gen'l John Bell Hood into Tennessee, it moved to the assault of the enemy's works at Franklin, with 285 men, and lost over two-thirds of them, mostly killed. Transferred to North Carolina, the Thirty-third took part in the operations there, and a remnant was there surrendered.

Field and staff officers: Cols. Samuel Adams (Butler; wounded, Perryville; KIA, Kennesaw Mountain); Robert F. Crittenden (Coffee; captured, Nashville); Lt. Cols. Daniel H. Horn (Coffee; resigned); Robert F. Crittenden (promoted); James H. Dunklin (Butler); Majors Robert F. Crittenden (promoted); James H. Dunklin (wounded, Chickamauga; promoted); and Adjutants John Crosby Stallworth (Conecuh; died, Tupelo); A. M. Moore (Greene; KIA, Chickamauga); Willis J. Milner (Butler)

Notes for Elizabeth Jane Rushing:
Ron, Thank you so much for responding. We have a conflict on Macks Elizabeth, perhaps we can figure it out. You have Elizabeth daughter of mack marrying J W Matthews in 1878 in Coffee County. My Grandpa's brother was Benjamin David Nelson born November 8, 1867. Benjamin David Married Elizabeth "Polly" Rushing about 1889. They had 11 children the oldest was Tobe born 1887, the others were Leonard, Minnie, Burrell, Mathew M, Ernest, Edlow, Dellie, Lelia, Lena, Maude. I know that our Mathew Mack Rushing was in the 33rd Alabama with my great grandpa G W Nelson and some of his cousins. I know that Mack lost an arm during the war. I know that Mack's wife was Sarah Amerson. Elizabeth's daughter-in-law just died this month. Her name was Lillian Lassiter Nelson, she was 93 years old. She knew Elizabeth "Polly" well Elizabeth "Polly" died June 28, 1938. Mack was definitely her father. Elizabeth is burried beside her husband Benjamin D Nelson at Antioch Cemetery near Zoar . The grave is well marked. Let me know what you think. Wayne Nelson P.S. If this is the right Elizabeth, and I feel sure that it is I can give you all her descendants. Sent to me by Wayne Nelson on 5 Oct 2000.
"Samson4" <samson4@i-1.net>

I just finished talking to the nephew of Benjamin Nelson who married Elizabeth. His name is Coadie Nelson, his dad was the brother of Benjamin. He knew Elizabeth "Polly" who was the daughter of Mathew Mack Rushing.
He said also that his dad who was Elwood Nelson grew up with and knew Perry Rushing. Coadie said that he knew some of the Rushings personally. They were Joseph, Thomas, John, William , Mathew, and David. Coadie
is 83 years old. I think I mentioned before about Lilliam Lassiter Nelson who married Benjamin Nelsons son Edlow. She was 93 years old and died only a couple of weeks ago. She talked about Elizabeth just a few days
before she died. I am very interested in what you think about all this. Please let me know what you think. If you live near the Antioch Memorial Cemetery at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church, our Elizabeth had a gravestone
there beside her husband Benjamin Nelson. Ben's has several brothers and his dad are buried in that cemetery. Thanks again for all the information. If you would let me know what you think of all this I would appreciate it. I value your opinion. Wayne Nelson (sent 10 Oct 2000)

Thanks for everything Ron, I have had time to look through all the information that you sent to me. I knew all along that the Rushing family was very interesting, but after reading all that you sent I am even more impressed. I
noticed that you have military experience. I had guessed so even before I ran across your part of the family. I am also a veteran. I served about 40 years in some form or other Air Force, and Army. active, reserve and national guard. I retired about one year ago as an Ordnance Warrant Army. If you decide to go to Antioch you will find Elizabeth there beside Benjamin. Just in case you havent been there before I will give you directions. The directions are north from Elba. North of Elba about 10 miles toward Brantley on Hwy 189, exit right on coffee 330. 330 will dead end into Coffee 306. Turn left onto 306 after about 5 or 6 miles you will come upon a severe curve about 90 degree right, just beyound the curve is Antioch Church and Cemetery. The church was established about 1867. When you park you will notice several Nelson head stones. James Nelson and his wife Francis. Mannie Nelson and his wife. Benjamin and Elizabeth have a headstone that rolls near the top. Their names are difficult to see unless you look near the top of the stone. The stone has been painted and had faded and
chipped. Also there you will find Benjamin's day George Washington Nelson and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Nelson (Carpenter) G W was in the 33rd Alabama with Mack. Sarah had a brother who was in the 33rd and died during the war. She also had two cousins in the 33rd Alabama. One of the cousins was killed. Thanks for everything. Let me know what you decide about Elizabeth. You would have loved to talk with (Lillian) Lassiter Nelson. She was Elizabeth's daughter-in-law. She was 93 years old and as spunks as any lady I have ever met. She died about 3 weeks ago. My last visit with her was about 6 weeks ago. We talked about Elizabeth & Mack. She said that Elizabeth was talking about her mother-in-law Sarah Elizabeth & G W Nelson her father-in-law. She laughed when she told me that Elizabeth had said that her mother-in-law was full of hell, but the old man G W was easy going. That sounds to me like typical mother-in-law daughter-in law even today. We had a good laugh when she told
me that. Acording to Lillian, and others, Elizabeth "Polly" was an excellent cook, and a sweet loving woman. I will send you information about the Nelson Connection. I also think that a cousin of mine is related to the Smart
decendants. My cousin was a McKinney. Giles Bryant Is Benjamin Nelson's sister's son. All kind of conections even the Spiveys. They were my mother's people. I have them back to the 1600's. Thanks again Ron Looking forward to hearing from you again. Wayne.

Notes for John MacDonald Rushing:
When a young boy, John had an eye put out by a splinter from some wood that his father was chopping.

John and Eudora purchased land from his parents, Mack and Sarah Rushing, 20 Jan 1898 in Coffee County, Section 31, Township 7, Range 20, recorded in Deed Book 0-2, page 357, Coffee County Courthouse, AL.

John and Eudora had six children and Eudora was carrying the seventh child when she became ill. Missouri Cook, a good friend and neighbor offered to help Eudora during this time. Eudora gave birth to a daughter whom they named Pearlie. Eudora died 11 Aug 1901, exactly one month after Pearlie's birth.

Missouri continued to help with the care of John's children and did such a good job that he asked her to marry him.

Notes for Missouri Ann Cook:
There are many deed transactions recorded in the Coffee County Probate Office for John and Missouri Rushing.
Missouri and John later moved into a house with four bedrooms and a large screened-in porch. The house was located in the Zoar Community. People enjoyed stopping by and having a drink of water out of John's & Missouri's well. They said that it was the best water around.
One day sparks from the chimney caught the roof of the house on fire. Friends and neighbors came and formed a line from the well to the roof top. They passed buckets of water to the roof and were able to put out the fire before too much damage was done.
Since the yard was lit with carbide lights on the fence posts, Missouri enjoyed sweeping the yard at night because it was much cooler.
