Mr. Tharp:

In looking at the Runnels genealogy site I noted your posting (Thomas Jefferson Runnels of Texas – reference). My mother’s family name is Tharp – our work, so far, starts with James Tharp of NJ (a descendant of Thomas Thorpe settled in MA)-- (James) who was the father of John Jacob Tharp – who was the father of Thomas Jefferson Tharp who was the father of William Dyer Tharp – who was the father of Edgar Tharp (my grandfather) and Edgar was my mother’s, Mavis, father. The family migrated west -- first to NY, then OH, then IN, then WI and then IA. I was born and raised in Manchester, Delaware Co., IA. The Thomas Jefferson Runnels name piqued my interest – given that Thomas Jefferson was my great great grandfather’s given name. Other than that, I could forward to you a rough family genealogy that I put together for reference. It would be interesting to know if we are related. There is a notation at the top mentioning the family legend that the family settled originally in VA in the 1650s – however, it seems more likely we are descended from Thomas Thorpe (eventually in NJ where John Jacob Tharp was born in 1776). My TJ was born in NY in 1810.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Judith Hartberg
