Hello, My name is John Hibbitts and my grandmother's maiden name was Elizabeth Porter Rumley the daughter of Jacob Rumley and Elizabeth Griffin. They lived on Black Mountain (probably on Va. side).
Here is the first story in a chain of stories my grandmother told my mother. This story was told by Elizabeth Griffin. When the Rumley name came into the U.S. it was Brumley but because of the bad feelings toward the Dutch the B was dropped.Jacob and Elizabeth were married in the time of the civil war.She was working in a tobacco processing warehouse in Winston Salem N.C. when they met. She never used tobacco because the floors were swept and all the filth was processed into the finished product.More later.
