Ms. Barry: John P. Ruhl was born 17 March 1839 in Perry Township, Richland County, Ohio; son of Levi Ruhl and Miriam Painter. He died on 3 November 1920 in New Point, Holt County, Missouri, and was buried there in Cowan Cemetery. His death certificate reports his father’s name, but not his mother’s. What is your source for John P. Ruhl’s middle name, Painter? Levi Ruhl, born 1808 in Pennsylvania, was a son of George Ruhl and Elizabeth Prosser. He died 1889 in Spokane County, Washington. Miriam Painter, born about 1809 in Frederick County, Virginia, was a daughter of John Painter and his second wife Rachel Redd. Levi and Miriam were married about 1832 in Richland County; there is no extant marriage record. The George Ruhl and John Painter families were early settlers of Perry Township. Levi paid a tax of 96 cents in Perry Township in 1836, and was enumerated in the township in 1840 and 1850. 1850 U.S. Census, Perry Twp., Richland Co., Ohio; p. 414, 10 Sep 1850. 33. Levie Rhule, 43, farmer ($4,000), PA. 34. Mariam Rhule, 39, VA. 35. Elisabeth -----, 13, OH. 36. George -----, 11, OH. 37. Rachel -----, 9, OH. 38. John -----, 7, OH. 39. Mary -----, 5, OH. 40. Caroline -----, 3, OH This 1850 census is the single known document from Miriam’s lifetime bearing her name. Probably after daughter Elizabeth married in Richland County in 1852, Levi and Miriam Ruhl’s family migrated to Holt County, Missouri. Miriam died there on 12 August 1856 and was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Oregon, Holt County. (Her age on her headstone, 44y 11d, does not appear to be accurate.) Levi, and the families of his daughters Elizabeth, Mary Olive, and Caroline later continued their westward migration, and by about the 1880s were living in Washington State. John P. Ruhl married Isabelle Cable on 7 March 1867 in Holt County. “Belle” Ruhl, according to her death certificate, was born 3 July 1840 in Ohio, daughter of “Rachal” Reese of Pennsylvania. Her father was not identified, which seems odd because the informant, Dr. I. E. Ruhl, was Isabelle’s son, Irwin Earle. She died on 27 May 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri, and was buried at New Point (presumably in Cowan Cemetery). This is Isabelle in the 1850 census: 1850 U.S. Census, Berlin Twp., Knox Co., Ohio; p. 19B, 30 Jul 1850. 23. John Cable, 53, farmer ($2,000), PA. 24. Rachel -----, 42, PA. 25. Rebecca -----, 20, PA. 26. Jonathan -----, 19, farmer, PA. 27. Mary -----, 17, PA. 28. Elizabeth -----, 14, OH. 29. Eliza -----, 12, OH. 30. "Isallea" [Isabelle] -----, 10, OH. 31. Martha -----, 8, OH. 32. Harriet -----, 6, OH. 33. Lewis -----, 3, OH. 34. Rachel -----, 1, OH. The John Cable household was enumerated in 1840 in Berlin Township--almost certainly Isabelle’s place of birth--and enumerated in 1860 in Perry Township, Richland County. Her mother, apparently widowed, was enumerated in Holt County, Missouri, in 1870. John P. and Belle Ruhl were enumerated in Holt County from 1870 to 1920. The 1900 and 1910 census report that she had five children, of whom three were living. These five children are: 1. Minnie Opal (1867-1957) 2. Jordan Ellsworth (1869-1940) 3. Irwin Earle (1876-1939) 4. Cora Pearl (1882) 5. Gaylord A. (1884-1894) Isabelle’s sister Martha Cable on 13 March 1862 in Richland County, Ohio, married Edwin C. Painter, first cousin of John P. Ruhl. Edwin and Martha moved to Holt County, Missouri, just after the Civil War. Martha’s sons also had some difficulty with her death certificate. They omitted her mother’s name; incorrectly reported her father’s name as Hambleton Cable, combining the first name of her father-in-law with the last name of her father; and incorrectly reported as her place of birth Mansfield, the county seat of Richland County, Ohio. Would be happy to discuss further, and provide sources. blueheron14@hotmail.com Notify Administrator about this message?
