Wives and Children of Isaac Rugg b. 1765

Query: Has anyone who has attempted to identify which children belong to the 3 wives of Isaac Rugg?

Ellen Rugg lists Isaac’s wives without dates, and does not specify which of 13 children belong to which wife.

Many other people list Isaac’s wives and children without providing a rationale for the relationship between wives and children. There are reasons for my own listing, based on certain information that may not be conclusive, but at least I do have reasons. I would like to hear from anyone who has different or better reasons for an alternate arrangement.

For Isaac’s first wife, Dorcas Gates, b. 1770 in VT, I have son Jonathan Gates Rugg, born 25 Dec 1794 in Whitingham, Windham Co., VT.

For Abigail Skinner, Isaac’s third wife, I have Catherine B. Rugg, born 28 Jan 1814 in Genesee Co. NY, and 9 children born later (Dorcas, Richard, Susan, Almira, Isaac, Major, Fidelia, Polly and Abigail Mary. This is based on William Adams’ 1893 book on Perrysburg stating that Catharine was the daughter of Isaac and Abigail, and by inference the 9 children born later.

I have chosen Isaac’s second wife, Polly Mattoon as the mother of Orilla Rugg, b. 1801 and John Rugg, b. 1807, for these reasons:
1) the 1800 census of Bolton, Washington Co. NY, near the listing of Abel Mattoon, is Isaac Rugg’s household of 3, two male and one female age 16-26, an age that does not fit with the birth of Dorcas Gates in 1770; 2) Isaac’s census listing in 1810 is probably the census of Rodman, Jefferson Co. NY, where he is indexed as “Rosh”--his family includes one female, age 26-45, an age that does not fit the birth of Dorcas Gates; 3) there is an IGI listing for a Polly Mattoon, born in Athens, Windham Co. VT, 10 Apr 1778—if she married Isaac Rugg, say about 1799, that would fit the ages in the census listings and position her as the likely mother of Orilla Rugg and John Rugg.

These choices suggest the death of Dorcas (Gates) Rugg on or after 25 Dec 1794 and before the 1800 census. They also suggest the death of Polly (Mattoon) Rugg between 1807 and 1814.

I would like to hear from anyone who knows of facts that supplement or contradict this analysis.
