Wm. Cain Jr. (the III) married Mary Ruffin, daughter of Thomas Ruffin who was a Chief Justice of NC in the 1800s. They both are mentioned in The Willie P. Mangum Papers, a 5-volume work (Willie was VP of the US in the 1840s among other titles). Two known sons of Wm and Mary's were mentioned also: Wm. Cain (the IV) b. ca 1830 and Sterling Ruffin b. ca 1825.

Wm. Cain Sr. (the II...his father, a wealthy merchant of Hillsboro, NC, was also named Wm. Cain) was the brother of Willie P. Mangum's wife, Chariety Alston Cain.

All these Wm.'s can get confusing but you can track them in The Mangum Papers.
