A Rudyard who killed an English king
I live a modest few miles from Rudyard, but most work is on other families in neighbouring Rushton and Horton, with Heaton coming in.One side note I found was from very old records about Radolphus Rudyard - written Ralph later. The battle of Bosworth in 1485 eliminated the old monarchy, placing the Tudors - Henry VII - on throne (grandson of butler to the bishop of Bangor). lord Stanley from Lancashire, with his 5000 strong force , changed sides late on. The Stanleys were also overlords of Rushton etc. and originated centuries before from Stanley village the other side of Leek. Ralph Rudyard was the man regarded as actually killing King Richard II. See Shakespeare's play - "a horse, a horse - my kingdom for a horse" - after his horse presumably was killed under him. In 1504 his son is called Thomas as an adult, and is presumably the ancestor of the Quaker Thomas Rudyard in same area.
