We share the feelings expressed about looking into the Thomas Ruddells. It’s been a mystery to us for some time.I’m afraid all we can add are some miscellaneous pieces of information in hopes that some will help complete the puzzle.
The Rockingham Co., VA Personal Property Tax Roll for 1787 included:
Ruddell, Thomas Sr. with 1 male under 16; 4 horses, mares, colts & mules and 7 cattle
Ruddell, Thomaswith 1 horse
Ruddell, George with 2males under 16; 1 over 16; 3 horses and 5 cattle
Ruddell, Williamwith 2 horses
Ruddell, John with 1 male over 16; 1 black over 16; 7 horses and 22 cattle
George and William Ruddell were in Militia Company 16
Thomas and Thomas Ruddell Sr. were in Militia Company 15
Rockingham Minute Book 1778-1792 Part 1
28 March 1786 Ordered that Thomas Ruddle, Sr. be exempted from County levy by reason of old age and infirmity.
Rockingham County marriages:
1785Elizabeth Ruddle, daughter of Thomas m David Kisling Book A p.144
1804Thomas Ruddle m Sophia Henry Book A p.811
Augusta County marriage:
1825 Thomas Ruddle m Margaret Hodge
And in 1823 Cornelius and Thomas Ruddell were joint grantees of 295 acres “on the west side of the Great Calf Pasture adjoining lands formerly belonging to Stephen Riddle.”This could be any one of several Ruddells named Cornelius.Ruddell, Ruddle and Riddle are all spellings as written in original records.
