Hi Melvin.
I see great hope for conflict resolution in the existence of Thomas Ruddell and his four sons.I am having a devil of a time reconcilling information about Captian George Ruddell.Either there are three of them, or there is one Captain and one or two others who have been incorrectly attributed.
There seems to be enough sources that refer to brothers Isaac and George who served with the Rockingham County VA Militia.I made a posting about my DAR application a few years ago.It refers to Captian George as being married to Elizabeth Preston. http://genforum.genealogy.com/ruddell/messages/518.htmlhttp://genforum.genealogy.com/ruddell/messages/518.html
I recently found one database with Revolutionary War Captian George Ruddell being the son of Cornielius Ruddell and his wife Sarah, which Cornelius was the son of the Thomas Ruddell presently in question. That makes a whole lot more sense to me than trying to figure out how George married Magdalene Byrd, Mary Goare, and Elizabeth Preston (Who lived to be 67).Now we need to find out if there is any indication that there was more than one Captain George, or if the title has just been attributed by geneologists to those Georges who did not merit it.
Then there is, according to the pdf that you sent a link to, a Captain George who married a Theodosia Lynn who is the son of Isaac Ruddell and Elizabeth Bowman. That George, though, was supposed to have been born in 1757, where my Captain George is listed as being born in 1740.Clearly not the same person. What evidence do we have that Theodosia and Isaac's son, George, was a captain?
I think we are very clearly dealing with 3 different Georges.Maybe there is only one Captain, maybe there are 3.What we really need are specific birthdates and military enlistment/discharge paper.
Working together, I know we can get this figured out.
Thank you,
Janika Rifley
