I have a document compiled by Grace Dotts Ruddell in 1956 that says that "In 1700 Thomas Ruddell came to Virginia on an 'English' boat. He had four sons, Archibald, George, Cornelius, and John."

However, I came to disbelieve this account after reading a much more credible explanation at http://www.ruddelltree.com .
There I learned that a John and Mary Ruddell started the Ruddell family in the U.S. with 6 boys: John, Jr.,Cornilius, Stephen, Archibald, Isaac, and George. If anyone can explain why this Thomas has very similarly named boys in the same time period, I would like to know.
