I am also descended from JOHN & EMMA LAY (RUDDLE).
My Great Grandfather was James E Lay their son, who married Maria Attwell in 1878 in Ballan,Australia. They are buried in Footscray Cemetery in Melbourne.
John & Emma's grave in Ballan is currently being restored by Philip Lay of Ballarat.
The Australian Lay family has been well documented by Philip Carter whose mother was a Lay. The family have had several reunions in recent years.
My Grandfather George was born in Ballan in 1882 and was the only son of James & Maria. He came to New Zealand as a young man and never left! I have a complete record of his New Zealand LAY family descendants - numbering well over 100. I also have had handed down to me an ornate piece of gold jewellery which belonged to John Lay. It came down to James - George - Donald then to me - Alan - and it will continue on to my son and grandson in turn.
I know little about the Wiltshire background of John & Emma and would appreciate making contact with you and hearing further information about our family connections.
