Hello Jonathan,
I have Rudd's in my mother's side of the tree in London.Mostly from the Brixton, Surrey area in the South of London.
My Grandmother was Elsie Kathleen Rudd (later Lawrance) b. early 1900's Her father was Sydney Stirling Rudd b. 1871 Brixton, Surrey was a piano tuner, married Helene Muller b. Mannheim Germany a music teacher in Paris.His father was Albert Rudd a piano maker with a shop in Dean St London married Caroline Mary Gilchrist b. 1841 London, Middlesex.
Annecdotal history says that we are connected with the Rudds of the Berry Brothers and Rudd international wine distributors.I have contacted John Rudd of Berry Bros & Rudd.He mentioned a 1920's book "Records of the Rudd family" This was his reply:
============================================================
The origins of the Rudds in the wine trade in the UK were Robert Gray Rudd (Jnr.) b.1813 and his second son Walter Randall Rudd, b.1852.They owned a Wine Merchants business in Norwich, Norfolk, named R. G. Rudd & Son.My father, Hugh Randall Rudd, b.1882, was the elder son of Walter Rudd.He joined Berry Bros. & Co. of 3 St. James's Street, London, as
Junior Partner in 1920.The Norwich business was closed after the death of Walter Rudd in 1927.
There is no Albert Rudd in the family tree of this family. The youngestbrother of Robert Gray Rudd, Henry Roger Rudd, is shown as dying in 1888 in New Zealand and his son, John Henry Rudd "born about 1848, emigrated to New Zealand not heard of since 1877";that part of the tree has not been brought up to date.
There are no notes on any Rudds in Australia in the 1920 book "Records of the Rudd Family", although I have seen in Queensland an area described as "Rudd Park".
John R. Rudd
