Hi there,
My Grandpa George William Oswald Rudd (1899-1981) was very active in tracing down the origins of our family, and through many years of research he was able to discover that there are two independent Rudd families, one that came from the southern part of England and one from the northern part. My family is from the north. The Southern part is the one that can brag about the Cutty sark label (Berry Bros. & Rudd) and I am pretty certain the race driver Ricky Rudd is from that family too.
My family on the other hand is fairly accurately detailed in a family tree covering pretty much everyone from my Grandpa's great grandfather William Rudd 1812-1872 and all the way to the present day. After my grandmother passed away ithas been in my aunt Lorna Dodsworth's (born Rudd)possesion. She also has a photocopy of the Rudd book mentioned in one of the follow-ups. I have copied in writing some of the information, both from the book and Grandpa's family tree, and it makes for a very interesting read.
At present I know there are "northern" Rudds living in Australia (WA), USA (TN & VA), Denmark (Hilleroed) and all over England. My family has its roots in the Teesdale area, in particular Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland.
But Rudds in the London area around 1900 are pretty much mainly "southern" Rudds, to the best of my knowledge.
Kind regards,
Torsten Rudd
