Hi, I tried to post this once already but don't see that it is showing on the board. I'll try again and hope it doesn't show twice!
I have a George Ruch who would be my ggg grandfather. He was from Alteckendorf, Bas Rhin. He came over to Pennsylvania in th 1840's I think. He settled in Mercer County where he married Esther Neely. They then moved from there to Ohio, eventually settling in Tiffin. George was a shoemaker from the history I have. A few of their children were born in Tiffin including my gg grandmother Elizabeth Catherine Margaret Ruch. At this point, I must add, the family was pronouncing and spelling the name as Rue. (Roo). The children all adopted this spelling for their last name. George and Esther had many children and I have the names, dates and deaths, as well as spouses for all of them. The Rue family eventually moved from Tiffin, Ohio to Sauk Centre and Glenwood, Minnesota where they died and are buried. I recently visited George and Esthers graves in Glenwood over the last summer. They were a very well known family in Glenwood and ran a hotel and an apothecary at one point. I have seen a picture of the apothecary and it had a sign on it saying: " Drugs, Patent Medicines and Yankee Notions". LOL! Guess that tells you what side of the war the Rue boys fought on. 3 or 4 of the Rue boys were in the Civil War and at least two that I know of died in Andersonville Prison. Another one never returned and was presumed killed in battle as well. The remaining children all pretty much stayed in the Glenwood area. If this sounds like your Ruch's (Rue's), then by all means contact me. I have plenty of info to share. I know that George had a brother too, who stayed in Ohio. His name was Jacob I believe. I don't know much on that part of the family but am learning some new things from this message board which must be the same Jacob from what I can see. I am personally interested in the Neely side of the family and would like to get any info on them that I can. I have in my posession also, a lace baby cap that belonged to Esther Neely and was passed down the family and eventually came to me. Also a letter from George Rue to his children written in 1876. It's pretty interesting stuff, for sure. So again, if this sounds like your Ruch's (Rue's) then please contact me and I will gladly share what info I have. Thanks in advance - Brian J. McIntyre - Helena, Montana.
