It is so convenient to have software specifically made for accumulating your genealogy. The program you use depends on the type computer you have. There are several genealogy programs available for IBM compatible machines, and Family Tree Maker is one of those.Since I have a Mac, I use Reunion for Macintosh. All programs should allow you to open a gedcom file if that is what you were sent.
Reunion allows me to make pages in HTML format that can be viewed by any machine as a webpage.
Perhaps you should ask your relative to tell you what format was used in making the CD.One of my relatives made me a CD using the Adobe format; however, none of the files were copyable. I had to retype everything.
