Haemochromatosis is a heriditary disorder in which there is excessive absorption and storage of iron. It can lead to damage and functional impairment of the pancreas, liver and endocrine glands. The main features are a bronze colour of the skin, diabetes and liver failure. It is more common amongst males than females and does not usually cause any problems until patients are in their 50s or 60s. Symptoms include diabetes, joint pain and dark skin discolouration. It is diagnosed by blood tests and can be treated by reducing the amount of iron in the blood by either blood letting or by medication to increase the rate at which the body excretes iron. I hope this helps explain the disease to anyone who is worried by the original message. (I work as a medical secretary).
