There is a 1760 Will for a David ROZAR in North Carolina naming wife Ann, as well as John, David, Shadrack, Sarah and Mashack (or perhaps "Meshack"). These names are particularly interesting. There is a very well documented David ROPER in early Orange and Caswell County, NC, with very clear connections to Charles City County, Virginia. There similarly is a Shadrack Roper who died leaving a Will in Powhatan County, Virginia in 1784. He was also witness to Thomas Roper's Will in Charles City County, VA, in 1766. One Thomas ROPER was amongst the very earliest of North Carolina's pioneers, with extensive land dealings on the Albemnarle and Pamlico Sounds as early as 1706. Jeremiah and Joseph ROPER were in South Carolina as early as 1710. Other than the 1760 ROZAR Will, I am aware of no earlier documented "Rozar"s in North Carolina at all prior to 1800. THe name "Shadrack" is a rather interesting common denominator. Shadrack was a singularly UNCOMMON first name in America prior to 1750. The FIRST mention I have been able to locate of a Shadrack or Shadrack (first name) in a Will anywhere in America was the Will of William Williamson, of Annapolis, Maryland, who mentions "brother" Shadrack Feddeman in his Will dated 10 Nov 1735. Two years later, Shadrach Boldfield, was a witness to the Will of Rebecca Darden. Interestingly, the ROPERs were in Anne Arundel and Prince George's County, Maryland, before settling in Charles City County, Virginia! In fact, Thomas Roper's widow, Mary Roper Hammond (d April 1721 - Anne Arundell, MD), married Major General John Hammond (d 1707 - Anne Arundell, MD), of Annapolis, after Thomas Roper's death. In the 1790 United States Census for South Carolina, there is a Shadrack ROZER, who is living adjacent to a John Hammand and a Charles Hammand in Edgefield, SC. Is this just a COINCIDENCE? After Shadrach Boldfield, the NEXT Will mention of a Shadrack or SHadrach seems to be the Will of John Brittingham, of Somerset COunty, MD, who names his son Shadrack Brittingham in a Will dated 6 Mar 1739. The FIRST mention of a "Shadrach" or "Shadrack" BIRTH anywhere in America is the birth of Shadrach Waddill to William and Sarah Waddill of Charles City County, Virginia. The ROPERs are intermarried with the Waddills in Charles City County and numerous ROPERs, including a DAVID ROPER (b 8 Jan 1727), were born in St. Peter's Parish, Charles City County/New Kent County. Other early Shadrachs, included Shadrach Estep, born in 1745, in Anne Arundell County, and Shadrach Hogan, born in 1734 in Wilkes County, GA, to William Griffin Hogan and Sarah Shadrach in 1734. The Hogan's lived nearby the ROPERs in Caswell County, North Carolina. It appears to me that Shadrack ROZAR named in David ROZARs Will is almost certainly one of the very first Shadracks in America. It seems awfully coincidental that this uncommon name would spontaneously appear in BOTH the ROPER and the ROZAR families at about the same time. IS THERE ANY EVIDENCE KNOW TO ROZERs OR ROZARs THAT DAVID ROZAR, OF NORTH CAROLINA, IS ANY OTHER THAN DAVID ROPER, ORIGINALLY OF CHARLES CITY COUNTY, VIRGINIA? OR AM I SAFE TO CONCLUDE THAT EITHER THE PERSON ACTUALLY WRITING THE WILL OR THE PERSON RECORDING THE SAME IN THE PUBLIC RECORDS SIMPLY MISSPELLED THE NAME? IS THERE ANY KNOWLEDGE OR HISTORY OF EARLIER APPEARANCES OF ROZERs IN THE EARLY NORTH CAROLINA RECORDS? Notify Administrator about this message?
