Af-Amer Roysters in VA late 1800s

I'm looking for info on my g-grandfather Joseph Lyons Royster. All I know about him is that he came from VA, possibly Clarkesville. I think the dob was about 1875. He left Va and came to Massachusetts. Any info on what organizations in VA I could write to would also be helpful.
