Actually, William Rowton Jr (who moved to Rutherford Co, TN) had a fourth son, born earlier than the three you named. The fourth son was named William Rowton.
Here are the names on the 1800 Charlotte County, VA, Personal Property Tax list:
Rowton, William Jr, son of William Jr (call him William III)
Rowton, William Jr (call him William II)
Rowton, William Sr (call him William I)
This is the first time the name of William III appeared on the Personal Property Tax lists. So William III was now 21 years old and so born about 1779.
The Charlotte County Personal Property Tax lists for 1801 - 1804 have only William Sr (William I) and William Jr (William II). Where was William III? He was in Prince Edward County VA. There are TWO William Rowtons listed on the 1801 - 1804 Prince Edward County Personal Property Tax lists. One of them was William Routon from Buckingham County. (The Buckingham County group used the spelling "Routon.") This William would remain in Prince Edward County until his death in 1830. The second William Rowton on the tax lists was William Rowton III.
William Rowton Sr died in Charlotte County, VA, about May of 1805.
1805 Charlotte County Personal Property Tax list
Rowton, Elizabeth (William Sr's estate listed under his widow)
Rowton, John (a son of William Rowton Jr)
Rowton, William(actually William II)
Rowton, William Jr (actually William III)
1806 Charlotte County Personal Property Tax list
Rowton, Elizabeth
Rowton, John
Rowton, William (William II)
Rowton, William Jr (William III)
Rowton, Willis (not sure who he was)
Charlotte County, VA, Marriage Records: William Rowton Jr married Sarah D. Adams (daughter of Charles Adams on 29 Oct 1806)
1806 is the last year the name of William Rowton Jr (William III) appears on the Charlotte County Personal Property Tax lists. However, the names of William Rowton and Charles Adams appear on the 1807 Lincoln County, KY, Tax lists. I suspect William III and his wife moved to Lincoln County, KY, with his father-in-law.
William III was still alive when his father, William Rowton Jr, died in Rutherford County, TN, in 1829. William III is not named in the will. This leads me to suspect that William III was born out of wedlock.
