I have quickly glanced through my family history book and have found the following info that may be helpful or interesting.
A brief paragraph from my family's history book states: "Old timers will remember Mike (Henry) Rowlett, a younger brother of Joseph Rowlett, who came to Gilbert Plains around the turn of the century and lived and worked here a number of years, and who was an accomplished musician. He could play any instrument except the piano, but was most noted as a violinist. He was very generous with his talents and played for entertainments and dances anywhere around the country. The Hudson Bay Co's magainze "The Beaver" records Mike Rowlett playing with a Red River orchestra in Winnipeg and surrounding areas in the 1890's."
My family's records begin with Joseph Rowlett from Rumford, Essex, England, and his son, James Rowlett (although it doesn't seem to have any record of Joseph's siblings or parents).Joseph was born Apr 10, 1857.
Joseph Rowlett married Emily Clara White.Their 9 children were: William Joseph Henry; James "Jim"; George Fishie "Fish" or "Fisher"; Mary Ann Louise; Emily Rose; John "Jack"; Agnes Frances; David; Evelyn.
James Rowlett married Edith Matilda Eastment (married Nov 7, 1901 in Gilbert Plains and witnessed by siblings Mary Ann Louise Rowlett and George Fishey Rowlett).James & Edith had 7 kids: Joe; Rosina, Archibald, Harold (my grandfather), Emily, Percy, and Gertrude.
James worked on the railroad (CPR) at Revelstoke, BC from 1910-1915.He returned to Gilbert Plains from 1915-1935.He moved west of Rose Valley, Sask in 1935 and then in 1953 they moved right into Rose Valley.
Part of the family was in Dauphin, Manitoba as I have a copy of a marriage certificate of a Rosina Emily Phoebie Rowlett marrying a Charles William Morgan there (witnessed by Percy J Rowlett & Emily H. M. Rowlett).
If you have any information relating to Joseph Rowlett's family -- ie: supposed younger brother, Mike "Henry" -- I would appreciate it.If you are interested in learning more info about this side of what is likely your family, please email me @ [email protected]
