Christopher Rowland 1700 -- 1792 thitheable of Robert Webb in Surry, VA
Ready to see something new on the Webb line research?
Remember that my last big discovery was that Robert Webb was called Joseph Robert Webb in the 1692 titheables of Surry Co.
"1692 -- Tho. Bently, Jo: Robt. Webb, an a negro man - 3"
Also recall that the 1713 will of William Webb in Isle of Wight mentions a son named Joseph
"Will of William Webb: Children Richard, William, Mathew,
Eliza, Susanna, Joseph, Thomas. Wife Mary. Dated 1708; pr.
25 Jan., 1713."
The son William Webb in the 1713 will was probably the titheable of Thomas Bently the year before Jos. Robt Webb.
"June 10,1691 -- William Webb was listed as a tithable of Thomas Bentley, Jr., in Surry Co., VA. "
Now... recall that Mary, the wife of William Webb, was Mary Taberer, the daughter of Thomas Taberer and Margaret Womble (Wombwell.)Thomas Taberer was the son of William Taberer.
"June 10, 1693 -- Robt. Webb was listed as a titheable of Thomas Bentley in Surry Co., VA."
Now look at the 1700 titheables.
"June 10, 1700 -- Robert Webb lists himself and Xtopher (Christopher) Rowland as titheables in Surry Co., VA.
1701 - Rbert (Robert Webb) again lists himself with Xopher (Christopher) Rowlen (Rowland) as tithables in Surry County, VA.
June 10, 1702 -- Xpher Rowlin (Christopher Rowland) and Robert Webb listed for third straight year as tithables in Surry Co., VA.
June 10, 1703 -- Robert Webb lists only himself as a tithable in Surry Co., VA. "
Who was this Christopher Rowland?Therein lies a clue for Robt. Webb.
Saria Anne Taberer was the sister of Thomas Taberer. Her father was William Taberer. She was born in England in 1634 and died in Virginia in 1675.
Saria Anne Taberer was the first wife of Capt. Robert Spencer. They had daughter Ann Sprencer, born abt 1660. Ann Spencer married William Rowland II and had son Christopher Rowland
Since Anne Taberer was the aunt of William Webb’s wife, she was the great aunt of William Webb’s children. Thus, William Rowland’s children by Ann Spencer were cousins to the Webb children because of the common Taberer connection.
Christopher Rowland, a descendant of William Taberer of Derbyshire England, supports the theory that Robert Webb of Surry was the son of the William Webb of Isle of Wight who bought land on the Surry side of creek, adjoining his Isle of Wight land.
