Dear Donna, et al.
There appears to be a great deal of confusion regarding this line of the Rowland family. I hope this will put to rest all the misinformation floating around out there. Please contact me should you have questions or need additional proof or have anything to add.
I descend from the Rev. Reuben Rowland who was the brother of the Henry Rowland in question. They APPEAR to be the sons of a John Rowland who likely died ca 1745 in Louisa or Albermarle Co., VA. This line of Rowlands also APPEAR to descend from Thomas Rowland and wife Grace of New Kent/Hanover Co., VA who had a son named John that would fit the John presumed to be the father of both Reuben and Henry Rowland.

Henry Rowland was born ca 1740-1745 most LIKELY in Louisa Co., VA. He was married to a Penelope Clark (b. 10/7/1747 Louisa Co., VA), the d/o Micajah Clark (1718-1808) and Judith Adams (1716-1780). Henry died at a young age leaving behind a widow who he named as Penelope in his 1773 Bedford Co., VA Will (WB1:192). He also left behind 4 children. He did not name them in his will but mentions the four. His estate was to held intact until they became of age.

The children appear to have all come of age in 1794 when Henry's estate was divided (Bedford Co. WB 2:137). That division mention a Reuben Rowland to receive 100 acres; Micajah Rpwland to receive 200 acres; Robert Rowland to receive 180 acres and a dtr Mary Rowland and husband Robert Moore to receive 145 acres. This document mentions that the land was adjoined by land held by Mr. Clay, Mr. Jefferson, Mr. Early, Mr. Ray and Mr. Sutton in Bedford Co. It seems safe to ASSUME that the 4 named were the same 4 children mentioned in Henry's 1773 Will and were in fact, his children.

Henry' 1773 Will was witnessed by a Joshua Early and it named Henry's brother, Reuben Rowland as an Executor.Micajah Clark Jr. and Robert Clark were also named as Executors. These would be his brothers in law., This Reuben Rowland was Henry's brother and my GGGGG Grandfather. THIS Reuben Rowland married Anna Blalock, the d/o John Blalock from the same area in VA.

Henry Rowland is listed in the "Fredericksville Parish Vestry Book 1742-1787". He is also found as a witness to several deeds in Albemarle Co deed books in 1760 and 1764.

From Henry's Will and the Division of his Estate we now have the names of his 4 children. The Bedford Co., VA Marriage records show the marriages of his children.

1. Robert Rowland md. Taby White, the d/o Stephen White on 8/12/1790. AS a youth, Robert had been apprenticed to a Lewis Johnston as a millwright in 1785.

2. Reuben Rowland md. Anna Patsy Ewing on 8/25/1792 with Wm. Ewing as security. The Will of Robert Ewing ( Bedford Co. WB 1:526) PROVES that Anna Patsy was his dtr as was her sister, Sidney who md. Reuben's brother Micajah.. Robert Ewing's will names both as his daughters and his wife as Mary.

It APPEARS that Reuben and Anna Patsy may have had a son named Henry who married an Elizabeth Sanders on 8/27/1816 in Christian Co., KY. THis is where young Reuben's uncle, Reuben Rowland had settled and his children ( thus young Reuebn's cousins). Reuben and Elizabeth sanders may have been the parents of a son named Robert Ewing Rowland born in 1833.

It's interesting that the above named Henry Rowland married Elizabeth sanders in 1816. It is NOT PROVEN but she may have been a step-cousin to Henry. Henry's grandmother, Penelope Clark Rowland married a Jonathan Sanders following Henry Rowland's death in 1773. This needs more research.

3. Micajah Rowland married Sidney Ewing the d/o Robert Ewing on 10/15/1793. Micajah's Will (Logan Co., KY WB B:37)was dated 1807 but not proven until 1817. It named his wife as Sidney and children as Micajah, Reuben E., Finis and Polly and 672 acres in KY. Micajah Rowland was listed on the 1810 Logan Co., KY census.

4. The Division of the Estate of Henry Rowland in 1794 in Bedford Co tells us that his dtr. Mary married a Robert Moore although no marriage date could be found for them nor any other info.

The Rowland family becomes very confusing. They reused the same names for their children over and over. Caution should be used not to confuse Henry and Penelope Rowland's children with those of his brother, Reuben and Anna Blalock Rowland.

Hope this helps! I welcome any more info you may have to share and comments, too!

Fondly,
Linda
